Classification of dangerous goods

Dangerous goods (DG) are subject to strict regulations throughout the entire transport chain because of their hazardous nature. Vessel owners, liners, port authorities and international bodies  led by the IMO  prescribe detailed documentation, certificates and handling rules to ensure safety and compliance. The complexity of DG operations arises from varied stakeholder requirements, extensive paperwork and specialised handling procedures, which is why adherence to the IMDG Code and robust shipboard/shore-side systems is essential.

Under the IMDG Code, DG are grouped into nine classes:

  • Class 1 — Explosives (e.g., fireworks)
  • Class 2 — Gases (compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases)
  • Class 3 — Flammable Liquids (e.g., paints, petrol)
  • Class 4 — Flammable Solids (including spontaneously combustible materials)
  • Class 5 — Oxidizing Substances & Organic Peroxides (may cause or intensify fire)
  • Class 6 — Toxic & Infectious Substances (poisons, medical wastes)
  • Class 7 — Radioactive Material
  • Class 8 — Corrosive Substances (acids, alkalis)
  • Class 9 — Miscellaneous Dangerous Substances & Articles (e.g., certain batteries, lawn weed-killer)
